Chapter 11 — The Lie Inside the Truth

Chapter 11 — The Lie Inside the Truth
Alejandro didn’t move after reading Elena’s message.
Don’t trust Isabel.
The words sat on the screen like a second heartbeat.
Victoria stood across the room, watching him carefully—too carefully.
“You look pale,” she said softly. “Bad news?”
Alejandro locked the phone.
“I saw the autopsy gaps,” he replied.
A pause.
Victoria tilted her head.
“And?”
Alejandro studied her face.
Not anger.
Not panic.
Calculation.
“You didn’t deny them.”
Victoria exhaled slowly.
“That’s because denial is for people who still believe the system is clean.”
That answer didn’t fit guilt.
It fit adaptation.
Like someone who had learned to operate inside corruption long ago.
Alejandro stepped closer.
“Then tell me what you are inside it.”
For the first time, Victoria hesitated.
Just a fraction.
Then—
“You think Isabel Alvarez is telling you the whole truth?”
That shift changed the air.
Alejandro narrowed his eyes.
“What did you say?”
Victoria walked toward the window.
“You’ve been given fragments. Pieces arranged to point in a direction.”
She turned back.
“But you haven’t asked who benefits from you believing me to be the only villain.”
A silence.
Then Alejandro said:
“Elena told me not to trust Isabel.”
Victoria nodded slightly.
“Smart girl.”
That was the first crack that didn’t belong to anger.
It belonged to doubt.
Victoria continued:
“Mateo Alvarez was not a saint. Your father was not helpless. And Isabel—”
She paused.
“—is not a widow seeking justice. She is a collector of narratives.”
Alejandro felt something tighten in his chest.
“Prove it.”
Victoria smiled faintly.
“I don’t need to.”
She stepped closer.
“You already feel it, don’t you? The inconsistencies. The gaps. The timing of deaths. The way every piece arrives exactly when you need it to move forward.”
Alejandro didn’t respond.
Because he had noticed.
He just didn’t want to admit it.
Victoria lowered her voice.
“You are being guided.”
A beat.

Then:
“And I am not the one holding the leash.”
