Chapter 12 — The Last Safe Place

Chapter 12 — The Last Safe Place
Elena met Alejandro at the old riverside bridge at dusk.
No Isabel.
No Victoria.
Just distance between truths.
Her hands were shaking when she saw him.
“I didn’t know if you’d come,” she whispered.
“I had to,” Alejandro said.
Elena searched his face.
“You read my message?”
He nodded.
“About Isabel.”
Silence.
Elena stepped closer.
“I don’t trust her.”
Alejandro exhaled slowly.
“I know.”
That surprised her.
“I don’t trust my mother either,” he added.
A bitter half-laugh escaped Elena.
“That’s the first honest thing anyone’s said in this story.”
They stood in silence for a moment.
Then Alejandro said:
“There’s something wrong with all of it. Every version. Every explanation.”
Elena looked down at the river.
“That’s because we’re not seeing the center.”
Alejandro turned to her.
“What do you mean?”
She hesitated.
Then reached into her coat.
And pulled out something he hadn’t seen in weeks.
The memory card.
Except—
it was different.
A second one.
Alejandro froze.
“You had another copy?”
Elena nodded.
“I didn’t give you everything.”
A long silence.
Then she said:
“Because I didn’t trust you yet either.”
That landed harder than anything else in the story.
Alejandro didn’t react immediately.
He just asked:
“What’s on it?”
Elena’s voice dropped.
“The part Mateo didn’t show you.”
Alejandro frowned.
“Elena—”
She interrupted:
“He didn’t just warn us about your mother.”
A pause.
Then:
“He warned us about what your father did to protect you.”
Alejandro went still.
Elena looked up.
“And about what Isabel removed from the story.”
That was the moment everything fractured.
Because suddenly—
there were no sides left.
Only layers.
Alejandro took the card.
Inserted it into his device.
The video opened immediately.
No static.
No delay.
A man appeared.
Older.
Not Mateo.
Someone else.
Unknown.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“If you are watching this, then the structure has already activated.”
Alejandro frowned.
Elena whispered:
“This is not the same file…”
The man continued:
“Victoria was never the origin. She was containment.”
Alejandro looked up sharply.
“What does that mean?”
The man on screen answered as if hearing him.
“It means your father, your mother, Isabel, and Mateo were all operating within a system designed long before them.”
Silence.
Then:
“And Alejandro Mendoza… you were never the target.”
A pause.
“You were the anchor point.”
The video ended.
Black screen.
No explanation.
No resolution.
Just absence.
Elena stepped back slightly.
“No,” she whispered. “That’s not possible.”
Alejandro stared at the blank screen.
Then slowly said:
“Someone built this story before any of us entered it.”
Elena’s eyes filled with fear.
“So what now?”
Alejandro looked at the river.
At the city lights reflecting like fractured truths.
Then said quietly:
“Now we find out who wrote it.”
Behind them, unseen in the distance—
May you like
a car engine started.
And didn’t turn off.
