Chapter 7 — The Officer Who Shouldn’t Have Been There
The rain didn’t stop.
It never seemed to stop in this part of the city, as if the sky itself was trying to wash away something it couldn’t erase.
Alejandro and Elena returned home just after midnight.
The house lights were on.
That was the first warning.
Elena stopped at the gate.
“I didn’t leave them on,” she whispered.
Alejandro didn’t respond. He was already scanning the perimeter—habit, not paranoia.
Then he saw it.
A car parked across the street.
Engine still warm.
No plates visible in the rain.
Inside the house, the front door was slightly open.
Elena grabbed his arm.
“Don’t—”
But Alejandro was already moving.
Inside, everything looked untouched.
Too untouched.
Like someone had cleaned the scene without leaving evidence of cleaning.
Then voices.
From the kitchen.
Alejandro stepped closer silently.
Victoria was sitting at the table.
And across from her—
a police officer.
Still in uniform.
Alejandro recognized him instantly.
Officer Duran.
The same man who had responded to Elena’s first emergency call.
The one who had told her “there’s nothing we can do.”
Victoria smiled when she saw Alejandro.
“Perfect timing,” she said calmly. “We were just discussing misunderstandings.”
Elena stepped in behind him.
Duran’s eyes flickered.
Just for a second.
Recognition.
Then neutrality.
Alejandro stared at him.
“You’re in my house.”
Duran cleared his throat.
“Sir, I was invited to clarify a domestic dispute.”
Elena laughed once.
A broken sound.
“A dispute?” she repeated. “Is that what we’re calling it now?”
Victoria leaned back.
“Your wife is distressed, Alejandro. She exaggerates events when emotional.”
Alejandro didn’t look at Victoria.
He didn’t look at Duran either.
He looked at the teacup on the table.
Three cups.
One recently used.
One untouched.
One half empty.
Someone had been here longer than “a clarification.”
Elena whispered behind him:
“He was here the night I called for help.”
Duran’s jaw tightened.
“That is not accurate.”
Alejandro took one step forward.
The air changed.
“Then explain why my wife has bruises that match restraint patterns.”
Silence.
Victoria sighed.
“Alejandro—”
“Stop,” he said.
Just that.
And the room obeyed.
Duran slowly stood.
“Major Mendoza, I suggest we resolve this through proper channels—”
Alejandro cut him off.
“Proper channels are what you used to ignore my wife.”
A beat.
Then Duran said something that changed everything.
“You don’t understand what your mother is protecting you from.”
Elena froze.
Alejandro’s voice dropped.
“What did you say?”
Duran hesitated.
Then looked at Victoria.
Just for permission.
That was enough.
Alejandro stepped forward—
and Duran backed up instinctively.
Victoria’s smile faded slightly.
“Officer Duran is here as a friend of the family.”
Alejandro looked at her.
“No,” he said. “He’s here as proof.”
And that was when Duran’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His face went pale.
Then he said quietly:
“I need to leave.”
And walked out.
No explanation.
No authority.
Just exit.
Alejandro turned slowly to Victoria.
“You’re using the police.”
Victoria didn’t deny it.
“That’s a very childish way to phrase it.”
Elena whispered:
“They’re everywhere…”
May you like
And for the first time—
Alejandro believed her completely.
