Chapter 4 — The Hidden Name

Chapter 4 — The Hidden Name
Alejandro didn’t sleep that night.
The memory card sat on the desk like a loaded weapon.
Elena had fallen asleep beside him, but even in sleep, her body stayed tense—like it had forgotten how to fully let go.
At 3:17 a.m., Alejandro finally gave up pretending.
He inserted the card.
The screen flickered.
Then—
a video opened.
Static first.
Then a voice.
An old man.
“I don’t have much time. If you’re watching this, then things have already gone wrong.”
Alejandro leaned closer.
The man on screen was unfamiliar—but the room behind him wasn’t.
Military decor. Old photos. A flag folded in the corner.
Then the man said a name that froze Alejandro’s blood.
“Luis Mendoza.”
His father.
Alejandro whispered, “No…”
The man continued.
“Luis asked me to protect something. He didn’t trust his home anymore. Especially not Victoria.”
A pause.
The man looked directly into the camera.
“If I’m dead, assume they accelerated it.”
Alejandro’s hand tightened around the edge of the table.
Behind him, Elena woke slightly.
“What is it?” she whispered.
Alejandro couldn’t answer.
Because the video cut to an image.
A document.
A trust agreement.
Signed by his father.
Then another name appeared in the frame.
Mateo Alvarez.
Elena sat up immediately.
“That’s him,” she said. “The man who came to the house.”
Alejandro stared.
“Elena… what exactly did he give you?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“The key. And instructions. He said your father left something in storage. Something Victoria couldn’t touch.”
Alejandro felt the room tilt slightly.
Because now it wasn’t just manipulation.
It was planning.
His father had anticipated this.
Before his death.
The video ended with one final line:
“If Victoria ever controls the house, the truth is already somewhere she cannot erase.”
The screen went black.
Silence followed.
Then Alejandro said quietly:
“My father was afraid of my mother.”
May you like
Elena didn’t correct him.
Because she had seen enough fear in that house to recognize it in others.
