The storage unit was located on the edge of the city.
Old industrial district.
Rain made everything look like it had already been forgotten.
Elena stood slightly behind Alejandro as he unlocked the door.
Her hand never left her sleeve.
Like she still didn’t believe she was allowed to take up space.
The door creaked open.
Inside:
dust, sealed boxes, military records.
And silence.
Alejandro stepped in first.
Box after box.
All labeled in his father’s handwriting.
Then he saw it.
A wooden chest.
Different from everything else.
Not military issue.
Personal.
He opened it.
Inside:
A silver baby bracelet.
Engraved name: RICARDO
Alejandro froze.
Elena whispered, “I didn’t understand that either…”
Under the bracelet—
a letter.
Folded carefully.
Alejandro opened it.
His father’s handwriting.

Alejandro felt his throat tighten.
The letter continued:
Ricardo is not my biological son.
Alejandro didn’t move.
Elena stepped closer slowly.
“But I raised him,” the letter said. “Because love is not always inherited. Sometimes it is chosen under pressure.”
A pause.
Then:
Victoria knew.
Alejandro’s breathing slowed.
Elena whispered, “Oh my God…”
The letter explained everything:
Victoria’s past relationship.
A hidden affair.
A pregnancy used as leverage.
A marriage built on financial protection—not love.
And Ricardo—
a child brought into a system of lies.
But the most dangerous line came at the end:
Victoria does not destroy people directly. She makes them destroy each other.
Alejandro lowered the letter.
His hands were shaking for the first time since returning home.

Elena touched his arm gently.
