Chapter 14: The Shadow of the Alley

The new school backpack felt heavier than a coffin.

Chloe stood at the end of the driveway, the crisp autumn wind biting at her pale cheeks. A hundred yards ahead lay the route to school. And halfway down that route was a narrow, sunless alleyway.

Her breathing instantly fractured. The innocent morning shadows stretching across the pavement suddenly morphed into jagged, grasping hands. Her tiny fingers dug frantically into the straps of her backpack. The plastic medical pouch hidden beneath her clothes felt like it was burning her skin. She couldn't move. Her feet were cemented to the concrete by pure, unadulterated terror.

Then came the heavy, clumsy squeak of oversized rubber soles.

A massive shadow fell over her, instantly swallowing the terrifying shapes on the pavement. Chloe flinched, violently curling her shoulders inward to brace for an impact.

But it was just bright yellow fur.

Barnaby Bear stood beside her, ridiculously out of place in the quiet suburban morning. Inside the stifling, claustrophobic helmet, David’s heart was shattering all over again. Through the tiny mesh screen, he watched the paralyzing horror drowning his daughter's wide eyes—a horror he couldn't soothe with his own voice, or hold back with his own hands.

The bear didn't try to push her forward. It simply stepped ahead, deliberately placing its massive, cartoonish body directly between Chloe and the dark mouth of the alleyway down the street. It became a bright, smiling, impenetrable wall against the nightmares.

Slowly, the bear held out the edge of its oversized, fluffy yellow paw. Not to grab her. Just offering a tether.

Chloe stared at the fake fur. Her small, bruised chest heaved as she fought back a suffocating panic attack. With a trembling hand, she reached out and gently gripped the edge of the yellow fabric.

Inside the boiling, airless mask, David squeezed his eyes shut, his jaw trembling as a hot tear slid down his sweat-drenched cheek. He was completely erased. He couldn't hold his daughter's hand as her father. But as a giant, absurd bear, he would walk through hell itself just to get her safely to the school gates.
