The sky bruised a sickly black, and the first violent clap of thunder rattled the living room windows.

David instantly shot up from the couch, his heart hammering in his throat. Rain meant terror. Rain meant the alleyway. He spun around, desperate to shield Chloe from the incoming panic attack.

But Chloe didn't hide. She didn't curl into a defensive ball on the floor. She walked calmly to the glass door, staring out at the torrential downpour washing over the gray pavement. Without looking back, she reached out her small hand. David moved to her side, sliding his rough, trembling fingers through hers. The roaring thunder crashed overhead, but she didn't flinch. The rain was just water again.
