Chapter 18: The Blisters

Chapter 18: The Blisters
The garage door rattled shut, plunging the space into absolute darkness.
David collapsed onto the cold concrete floor. His violently trembling hands reached up, frantically tearing the massive yellow helmet off his head. The rush of stale garage air felt like freezing oxygen against his boiling skin.
He lay flat on his back, gasping for air like a drowning man dragged from the freezing depths. His clothes weren't just damp; they were entirely plastered to his body, heavy and dripping with sweat. His shoulders shook in uncontrollable, exhausting spasms. When he peeled off his heavy work boots, the skin on his heels was raw, torn open into bleeding, weeping blisters from hauling the crushing weight of the suffocating suit for miles every single day.
The door leading to the kitchen creaked open. A sliver of warm light cut across the dark floor, illuminating David’s broken, trembling body.

Sarah stood in the doorway. She held a glass of ice water and a roll of bandages. She didn't speak. She didn't offer empty platitudes about how things would get better. She simply knelt beside her husband on the filthy concrete, carefully lifting his bleeding foot into her lap to wrap it.
David threw his forearm over his eyes, his chest violently heaving as a ragged, exhausted sob finally tore from his throat. The physical agony of the blisters was nothing compared to the sheer, terrifying desperation of holding his family together from behind a plastic mask.
