Chapter 4: The Shattered Reflection

Chapter 4: The Shattered Reflection)

The steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor suddenly spiked.

Sarah gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Beneath the tangle of tubes and heavy bandages, Chloe’s eyelids fluttered. They slowly opened. Her eyes, usually so bright, were clouded with a thick, drug-induced haze. But as they found Sarah’s face, a single, desperate tear broke free.

"Mommy..." The word wasn't spoken; it was a silent, agonizing breath against the plastic oxygen mask.

David’s heart hammered violently against his ribs. The suffocating weight on his chest lifted for a fraction of a second. She’s awake. He stumbled forward, his large, rough hands trembling as he reached out to comfort his little girl.

"Chloe, sweetie... Daddy’s here."

Chloe’s eyes shifted toward his voice.

The reaction was instantaneous. The haze in her eyes vanished, instantly replaced by a pure, primal terror. Her pupils dilated until they swallowed the iris. The heart monitor began to scream—a frantic, erratic alarm tearing through the silence.

Chloe violently recoiled. She dragged her broken body backward, pressing herself against the metal bedrail, letting out a stifled, breathless whimper like a cornered animal. She squeezed her eyes shut and frantically shook her head. Her tiny, bruised hands flew up, violently pushing the empty air away.

Pushing him away.

David froze. His breath hitched in his throat. His outstretched hand hovered in the empty space between them, shaking uncontrollably.

The realization hit him with the physical force of a sledgehammer. The monster in the alley... was a man. And right now, looking through the shattered lens of his daughter's trauma, he wasn't her father. He wasn't her protector.

He was just a man.

David staggered backward, all the oxygen suddenly sucked from his lungs. His jaw trembled, and a look of absolute, sickening devastation twisted his features. Clamping a heavy hand over his mouth to choke back a gut-wrenching sob, David turned and fled the room, his soul completely crushed under the weight of her fear.
