Chapter 8: The Plastic Crinkle
The quiet hum of the hospital room was broken by a sickening, unnatural sound.
Crinkle.
Chloe froze. Her small hands, still wrapped in thick white gauze, nervously gripped the hem of her hospital gown. Slowly, with agonizing hesitation, she pulled the fabric up.
There, strapped directly to her tiny, bruised abdomen, was a medical stoma pouch. The brutal, permanent proof of what had been ripped away from her body.
Her breath hitched. The innocent confusion in her eyes rapidly morphed into stark, paralyzing horror. A dark flush of profound shame crept up her pale neck. She frantically tried to push the plastic pouch away, her fingers trembling violently, but the medical tape pulled painfully at her skin.
"Mommy..." Her voice was a terrified, reedy whisper. "What is this? Make it go away. Please."
Sarah collapsed to her knees beside the bed. Her own heart was being fed through a meat grinder, but she forced her facial muscles into a mask of gentle, unwavering calm. She reached out, carefully wrapping her hands around Chloe's frantic, shaking fingers.
"It’s okay, bug," Sarah choked out, swallowing a mouthful of pure agony. "It’s... it’s a magic pocket. It's helping your tummy heal."
Chloe shook her head violently. A gut-wrenching sob tore from her throat. She curled into a tight, defensive ball, pulling the blanket over her head as if she could hide from her own body. The shame was physically suffocating her.
Outside the door, peering through a two-inch crack, stood David.

He leaned heavily against the wall, sliding down until he hit the cold linoleum floor. He pulled his knees to his chest and buried his face in his rough hands. His shoulders shook in violent, silent spasms. Hearing his daughter weep over a body that no longer felt like hers, a cold, murderous rage began to permanently calcify around his shattered heart.
