The attic was quiet and thick with dust. David knelt on the wooden floorboards, carefully folding the heavy, matted yellow fur of Barnaby Bear.

His hands lingered on the massive, grinning plastic helmet. It was scratched, dented from the asphalt, and permanently smelled of stale sweat and desperation. It had been his prison, his disguise, and his absolute salvation.

Slowly, David placed the helmet into the cardboard box and folded the flaps shut. The armor had served its brutal purpose. He didn't need to be a cartoon hero anymore. He was David. He was her father. And that was finally enough.
