Chapter 6: The Armor

The storage room was cramped and smelled of old cardboard. David stared at the oversized, ridiculously cheerful head of 'Barnaby Bear'—Chloe’s absolute favorite cartoon character.

His hands shook violently as he pulled the heavy, suffocating yellow fur over his broad shoulders. The air inside the suit was instantly stifling. He hesitated for a fraction of a second before pulling the massive, permanently grinning bear head over his own.

Total darkness. Then, looking out through the tiny mesh mouth, a narrow, distorted view of the world.

Inside the dark, silent confinement of the mask, David finally broke. The ridiculous, smiling face of the bear stared brightly in the mirror, while inside, a shattered father wept uncontrollably. Hot tears streamed down his face, soaking into his sweat-drenched collar. The air was unbearably hot, but he didn't care.

This suffocating suit was his prison. And it was his only way back to her.
