David walked beside Chloe down the suburban sidewalk. They approached the dark, narrow mouth of the alleyway. David’s chest tightened instinctively, his muscles coiling, ready to step between her and the shadows.
Chloe stopped. She looked directly into the suffocating gloom of the alley. A heavy silence stretched for two agonizing seconds. Then, she simply tightened her grip on her father's massive hand, turned her head, and kept walking forward. She left the darkness exactly where it belonged—behind her.
