David stood in the quiet hallway, pressing his forehead against the cold observation window. Inside the room, Sarah was gently brushing Chloe’s hair. Chloe looked calm. Safe.
As long as he wasn't in there.
"It’s not you, David," the psychologist whispered, standing beside him. "Her brain has linked adult men to her trauma. It’s a primal defense mechanism."

David didn’t blink. His eyes were hollow, red-rimmed voids. He watched his daughter smile—a fragile, broken little curve of the lips—at something Sarah said. A physical ache tore through his chest. He was locked out of his own life.
His fists clenched at his sides until his knuckles turned bone-white. He would endure any agony to hold her again. If she was terrified of men, he would simply stop being one. He just needed a disguise.
